Old Oak Trees and New Churches: The Summer Residence of the Tsars
Visit the Open-Air Museum at Kolomenskoe
A four-metro-station ride from the center of town will transport you into a different world: To the former summer residence of the tsars. The former summer residence of the tsars now features an open-air museum, a collection of historical wooden structures that have been transferred here from all over Russia. Part of the exhibition is the log cabin that housed Peter the Great as he supervised a construction project in Arkhangelsk and some of the oldest idols that have existed for as long as a thousand years. At Kolomenskoe is also the Church of the Ascension which was built in 1532 by Vasily III celebrating the birth of his son Ivan, who later became (in)famous under the name Ivan the Terrible.
